Dating from 1654, the map shown to the right is one of the earliest representations of the Orkney
Islands.
Engraved by Johan Blaeu, the map takes its information from an earlier source — a map prepared by Timothy Pont, who lived between c.1564 and c.1614, and visited Orkney in 1592*.
